We visit quite regularly as a family and have always enjoyed the food and the service but after a visit yesterday, don't think we will bother again.One of our group asked for a half portion fish pie with salad ( the person in question having been unwell and only having a small appetite)they kindly said a half portion was no problem.When the fish pie arrived it was in a cereal bowl all sloppy and soft not having been browned on top but just heated in a microwave and the salad was in another bowl.The barn itself was almost empty, but the the service was almost non existent, we waited and waited to try and order desserts and more drinks but could not find a staff member.We made the effort to pay even though we felt very badly about the poor quality of food and not wanting to upset the rest of our group.Eating out should be a pleasure,it should be as good, if not better than what we eat at home.
What a beautiful selection of food, whether it's meat, fish, cakes, jams or chocolates. We were absolutely spoilt for choice when we stopped here after our alpaca walk, it was a lovely friendly little shop with a beautiful log fire to sit next to. Will definitely be back again soon, it's well worth the 3 hour round trip just to see this shop
The facilities and gardens are great but the restaurant is meat/fish heavy with little choice for the (growing number) of vegetarians. I opted for a Ploughman's minus the ham. My companion chose the same but kept the ham. They both came on a small cheeseboard comprising coleslaw (excellent), salad (excellent), onion chutney (a little too sweet), the cheese and/or ham and one piece of ready-buttered sliced white cut into two (disappointing and too floppy to put the ingredients on). When I politely & quietly told a waiter we were expecting French bread he answered with a smart remark saying loudly "you're in Kent, so you get Kent bread" and turned and walked away. He did get his cheap laugh, but I felt humiliated (and wishing I had said crusty bread). Neither my companion nor I enjoyed our lunch as it looked like a board of make-your-own sandwich ingredients - if, of course, there had been two slices of bread. The younger waiting staff were quick, polite and delightful. My bill came to over 11 for the sandwich ingredients and a bottle of juice. I left a tip as the younger staff were worth it - but one doesn't go for a lunch in a pretty place to be made to feel ashamed by a smartypants.
Can't speak highly enough of this place. .... absolutely love it. This is definitely my regular go to for my weekly shop!The produce are all locally sourced at the butchers, fish mongers, in-house bakery and greengrocers. Some of the meat and groceries even come from the Quex Estate itself.The food is amazing..... from the freshly made artisan breads and cakes available at the in-house bakery, through to the freshly made doorstep sandwiches and 3-course meals available in the restaurant. Plus there's also a caf for tea's, coffees or even a tipple should you need one after all that shopping! You can also grab one of those made-to-order doorstep sandwiches (all made from in-house items) or a piece of cake to go with your drink should you fancy one. Be warned the size of their sandwiches, along with the salad and chunky chips, are not for the faint hearted! On top of all that the staff in the shopping areas are always extremely friendly and highly efficient. Service with a smile!
Wonderful cakes and cream teas in the caf. Great selections of jam and meat produce (including Ox Livers!!) to buy. Lots of sweets and chocolate gifts (or for yourself. No shame here!)Also sells great artwork and has wonderful decor everywhere. Lots of seating both on the ground floor and in their surprisingly warm & comfortable roof conversion.
